Government Grants for University Students

American University grants or the university grants, as they are popularly known serve as the launch pad for several talented American students. Running into several thousands of dollars each year these specialized grants are made available for the specific reasons of pursing higher education at the university level. Each advanced level of study brings with it fresh and increased fee structure which a normal middle class family can ill afford. Therefore, the federal government has chosen to subsidize the study of such American citizens who can prove their financial constraints and apply thorough proper channels and procedures for financial help from the federal government.

The federal government on very broad categories chooses to award its financial aid instruments under three broad categories. The first and by far the most popular of the financial aid instruments are the grants. In awarding this type of grant, the government does not place any kind of liability on the student receiving such an award and one does not have to return such monies under any circumstances. The grant is awarded for a period of one year. Each year the application for the grant will have to be renewed and it becomes a quicker process the succeeding years. One mandatory formality will be to submit the Federal Application for the Federal Student Aid or the FAFSA each year updating the financial conditions of both the parents of the student.

The second type of financial aid would be the scholarship programs where there are both need based as well as merit based scholarships, which a student can avail of to fund his or her studies. The third common type of financial aid is the work for pay scheme, whereby the student will get paid a stipend or a salary for the work he or she renders.  Of all the three types of financial aid offered by the federal government, the most popular and sought after financial aid remains the grants. Therefore greater focus on the university grants has to be given to gain maximum advantage of the situation.

The American University grants will be aggregated with any other financial aid the student may otherwise acquire in the payment of the tuition fee. The academic performance is also very important in continuing with the grants for the following year.  In addition, university grants may be disregarded in favor of endowments if there are any constraints on the funds at the university.

Another special feature is the supplementary university grants that can be applied for to augment any particular academic requirement.  But it will be clearly cited that such a grant is only for that particular period and will not necessarily be awarded the following year.
